Assigned Class

American Studies Course, Faculty of Liberal Arts
Graduate School Doctoral Course in Japanese and Asian Culture

Research Field

Modern Japanese History
History of US-Japan Relations
History of Japan
keyword:History of the Showa Period , politics , thought , nationalism , army and navy , Asia-Pacific War

Current Subject

Prewar and wartime political and intellectual history
My research centers primarily on the political and intellectual history of Japan from World War I through the 1940s. While researching a book about the thought and activities of the nationalist ideologue Yasuoka Masahiro (1898-1983), I have found myself also writing about reformist "new bureaucrats," wartime Pan-Asianism, and the end of the war. At some point I also hope to look at the Imperial Japanese Navy and politics. In the field of US-Japan relations, I am particularly interested in the history of the Pacific War.
