Cambodia has been portrayed as the most pro-China country in Southeast Asia. We argue that such views oversimplify and overgeneralize Cambodia’s agency and its perception of China. Acknowledging the multifaceted nature of Cambodians’ perceptions of China, we examined these perceptions using data from our extensive survey in the capital city and 11 provinces. We identify several key factors influencing these perceptions, which vary significantly across regions and groups. The data indicate a multifaceted and evolving relationship between Cambodia and China. While Cambodia’s economic growth and Chinese investments have strengthened ties between the two nations, it is crucial to recognize the diversity of perceptions among Cambodians. Policymakers and stakeholders in both Cambodia and China should consider these nuances to foster mutually beneficial partnerships.

This study investigates institutional factors affecting the performance of genuine savings (GS), which are often used in assessing sustainable development, and adopts a model of autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity in mean. We pay particular attention to the contribution of institutions to decrease the volatility level of the GS path. The estimation results show that there are two ways in which institutions affect GS performance. First, high quality of institutions enhances the GS level directly. Second, high quality of institutions enhances the GS level via stabilizing the volatility of the GS path. Considering both effects in their totality, institutional improvement plays an important role in realizing a sustainable development path.

  • Corruption and natural resource rents: evidence from quantile regression

    Applied Economics Letters, Volume:24, Number:20, First page:1490, Last page:1493, Nov. 2017, [Reviewed]
This study examines the impacts of oil rents on corruption for 157 countries. While existing studies have primarily focused on average effects, we employ quantile regression to estimate the effects of natural resource abundance for different corruption levels. We consider the effects of natural resource rents, mainly oil rents and then compare them with those of total and non-oil natural resources rents. The estimation results show that, generally, more oil rents increase corruption. Specifically, impacts are larger in countries with an intermediate level of corruption and smaller in highly corrupt countries. While total resource rents increase corruption significantly, non-oil resource rents do not. This may be due to non-oil resource rent management (mainly inland) being more subject to public scrutiny. Non-oil natural resources are concentrated in the less-developed sub-Saharan African countries, where corruption is prevalent
therefore, the impacts of natural resource rents are unremarkable.

In recent years, although Cambodia has achieved economic growth at remarkable rates, its poverty situation, especially in rural area, is still widely observed, and poverty reduction is still a priority in the government's policy agenda. The information on financial diaries of poor households can provide good implications for designing policy to combat poverty. Understanding this importance, a project collecting financial dialy data in Cambodia was proposed. In preparation, a preliminary survey on randomly selected households in a selected commune was conducted in February 2016. The survey questionnaire is divided into several main parts. This report presents the results and statistics from the household information collected in that survey, including household structures and characteristics and the migration of the household members.

This paper examines the relationship among ethnic composition, political regimes, and social welfare. We provide a simple model which divides individuals in each ethnic group into two types of individuals: the benevolent and the self-interested. Each individual determines whether or not to run for office. A policy maker, who allocates government budget among ethnic groups, is chosen among the candidates by voting. In a democracy, all individuals can run for office and can vote in the election. In a dictatorship, the right to run for election and the right to vote are limited to a specific ethnic group. We investigate how ethnic diversity affects selection of a politician and the resulting policy choices in democratic and dictatorial regimes. Ethnic composition affects electoral outcome and policy payoff. Thus, individuals' incentive to run for election depends on ethnic composition. The size of ethnic group in power also affects social welfare. Our model derives (1) a negative relationship between ethnic diversity and social welfare, both in a democracy with a dominant group and in a dictatorship, and (2) a non-monotonic relationship in a democracy without a dominant group. In the empirical examination, employing health outcomes as the proxy for the social welfare, our theoretical results are supported by evidence from the data of 157 countries.

    GLOBAL ECONOMIC REVIEW, Volume:43, Number:3, First page:207, Last page:220, 2014, [Reviewed]
We investigate the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on economic growth in 130 countries from 1995 to 2008, considering the role of corruption in each country as an absorptive factor. The estimation results indicate that although FDI alone does not promote economic growth, it has a significant effect on economic growth if the interaction term between FDI and corruption is considered. Specifically, FDI has a positive impact on economic growth when corruption is severe, but a negative impact if corruption is below a certain threshold.

  • A study on the socio-economic determinants of suicide: Evidence from 13 European OECD countries
    Keisuke Okada; Sovannroeun Samreth
    Journal of Socio-Economics, Volume:45, First page:78, Last page:85, Aug. 2013, [Reviewed]
Suicide causes huge economic losses, and the study of suicide from a socio-economic perspective is indispensable. This paper examines the factors affecting suicide in 13 European Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries. We use the autoregressive distributed lag approach to cointegration as our estimation methodology. Our results reveal an increasing impact of divorce rates and a decreasing effect of per capita real gross domestic product on suicide rates in nine countries. However, evidence on the effects of fertility rates and per capita alcohol consumption is relatively less. For fertility rates, the results indicate that an increase leads to a decrease in suicide rates in four countries and a rise in one country. As for per capita alcohol consumption, we confirm evidence of a significant increasing effect on suicide rates in only three countries. In addition, the cumulative sum and cumulative sum of squares of recursive residuals tests results provide evidence of the stability of the estimated model. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. Economic Modelling, Volume:29, Number:6, First page:2340, Last page:2348, Nov. 2012, [Reviewed]
Previous studies on the effect of government size on corruption have produced mixed results. In an attempt to explain these ambiguous results, this study investigates the effect of government size on corruption by taking into account the role of the democracy in each country. Using annual data of 82 countries between 1995 and 2008, the estimation results indicate that an increase in government size can lead to a decrease in corruption if the democracy level is sufficiently high and, in contrast, can lead to an increase in corruption if it is too low. As robustness checks, the estimations using a different index of corruption and a different proxy for government size are also conducted. The results reveal that our main findings are robust. Furthermore, to address endogeneity problems, we conduct the instrumental variables estimation and the system generalized method of moments estimation, the results of which also support our primary findings. These results provide some important implications for policymakers seeking to perform government interventions without aggravating corruption. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

International Journal of Sustainable Development, Volume:15, Number:4, First page:293, Last page:312, Oct. 2012, [Reviewed]
This paper presents a numerical examination of sustainability from the perspective of 'genuine savings', using a dataset provided by the World Bank. Unlike previously-used criteria of sustainability that focus on observed paths of genuine savings rates, we consider future sustainability by simulating future paths of genuine savings. This analysis shows that some countries that had been classified as being sustainable by previous studies, using observed paths, are in fact, not sustainable from the perspective of future sustainability. We provide information on capital components which should be targeted by policy makers in order to maintain future sustainability. Copyright © 2012 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

  • Empirical study on the determinants of CO2 emissions: evidence from OECD countries

    APPLIED ECONOMICS, Volume:44, Number:27, First page:3513, Last page:3519, 2012, [Reviewed]
This article empirically investigates the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) for CO2 emissions in the cases of 11 OECD countries by taking into account the role of nuclear energy in electricity production. The autoregressive distributed lag approach to cointegration is employed as the estimation method. Our results indicate that energy consumption has a positive impact on CO2 emissions in most countries in the study. However, the impact of trade is not statistically significant. The results provide evidence for the role of nuclear power in reducing CO2 emissions only in some countries. Additionally, although the estimated long-run coefficients of income and its square satisfy the EKC hypothesis in Finland, Japan, Korea and Spain, only Finland's EKC turning point is inside the sample period of the study, providing poor evidence in support of the EKC hypothesis.

  • An empirical study on the hysteresis of currency substitution in Cambodia
    Sovannroeun Samreth
Journal of Asian Economics, Volume:22, Number:6, First page:518, Last page:527, Dec. 2011, [Reviewed]
This paper examines whether the currency substitution (CS) phenomenon in Cambodia is in a hysteresis state. We employ a simple model of money-in-the-utility function with two currencies (home and foreign), in which the effect of network externalities on the use of foreign currency is taken into account. The equation derived from the model is estimated using the autoregressive distributed lag approach to cointegration for the period from June 1993 to June 2009. Our estimation results indicate that (1) there exists a stable, long-run relationship among the variables considered, (2) the CS ratio increases when people expect a higher rate of depreciation in the exchange rate, and most importantly, (3) there is evidence supporting the existence of a network externality, thereby implying the hysteresis of the CS phenomenon in Cambodia. Given the characteristics of the CS process in Cambodia, any measure or policy option to bring down the CS degree must be carefully considered. © 2011 Elsevier Inc..

    APPLIED ENERGY, Volume:88, Number:5, First page:1986, Last page:1996, May 2011, [Reviewed]
This paper investigates whether the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis for CO2 emissions is satisfied using the panel data of 28 countries by taking nuclear energy into account. Using the pooled mean group (PMG) estimation method, our main results indicate that (1) the impacts of nuclear energy on CO2 emissions are significantly negative, (2) CO2 emissions actually increase monotonically within the sample period in all cases: the full sample. OECD countries, and non-OECD countries, and (3) the growth rate in CO2 emissions with income is decreasing in OECD countries and increasing in non-OECD countries. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. ENERGY POLICY, Volume:38, Number:8, First page:4057, Last page:4063, Aug. 2010, [Reviewed]
This paper attempts to estimate the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) in the case of France by taking the role of nuclear energy in electricity production into account. We adopt the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach to cointegration as the estimation method. Additionally, we examine the stability of the estimated models and investigate the Granger causality relationships between the variables in the system. The results from our estimation provide evidence supporting the EKC hypothesis, and the estimated models are shown to be stable over the sample period. The uni-direction running from other variables to CO2 emissions are confirmed from the casualty tests. Specifically, the uni-directional causality relationship running from nuclear energy to CO2 emissions statistically provides evidence on the important role of nuclear energy in reducing CO2 emissions. This article contributes a new empirical study on currency substitution in Cambodia. In our analysis, a model of money-in-the-utility function is adopted. The empirical results indicate that the elasticity of substitution between foreign and domestic real currency balances in Cambodia is high. Moreover, the high share of foreign real balances in providing domestic liquidity services in Cambodia is also confirmed by empirical analysis. Given these findings, the effects of the currency substitution on the government ability to gain from seigniorage revenue are also examined. The analysis from simulated results shows that the Cambodian government has little opportunity to gain from seigniorage revenue.

The information on financial diaries (i.e., income, expenditure, financial transaction, etc.) of the poor can provide important implications for policy actions to improve their living standards. As the first attempt, this research constructed a database of financial diaries of poor households in rural Cambodia and analyzed the patterns in those financial diaries. Furthermore, it also implemented comparative studies on financial diaries of the poor in Cambodia and the poor in other countries. Various implications and new insights into financial diaries of the poor were obtained from this research.

This research aims to estimate and examine the money demand function and dollarization problem in developing countries. We specifically focus on the case of Cambodia, whose degree of dollarization is the highest among Southeast Asian countries. In this research, the money demand function that takes into account the dollarization phenomenon is estimated for the case of Cambodia. The stability of the estimated model is also tested. Furthermore, since the dollarization phenomenon has both advantages and disadvantages for an economy, their examination is important. In order to examine this for the case of Cambodia, the dataset for the quantitative analyses is prepared, using the database and documents obtained from the institutions, such as the National Bank of Cambodia and the International Monetary Fund.
