Currently, Western European rural areas are experiencing population retrogression from cities to farm villages. Using a French rural village that has experienced population growth as an example, this study discusses the state of rural villagers’ lives and background factors by focusing on their state of mind. The background growth factors behind people relocating to the village of Quintigny can be attributed to its commutability to the city for work/school, with the quiet environment, affordable land prices, old farmhouses, and other aesthetic features as background factors. Most of the relocated residents enjoy renovating their houses by themselves; thus, they tend to be civil servants or people with more free time. They prize the village highly not only for its location and environment but also for its sense of vitality. While Quintigny emphasizes communication among residents within the area, it does not force it, reflecting Quintigny’s characteristics.

ICHIKAWA Yasuo
Journal of Geography (Chigaku Zasshi), Volume:128, Number:6, First page:921, Last page:940, 2019, [Reviewed]Inbound walking tourism at the Nakasendo-route post towns of Tsumago-juku and Magome-juku is investigated to clarify the format and the context of the walking tourism experience from the motivation of visiting Western tourists. A questionnaire survey was carried out in a case study on the Nakasendo-route (Kisoji) between Tsumago-juku and Magome-juku. The results of the survey reveal the following. Western tourists visit the Nakasendo route hoping for a "different tourist experience," not "something found in inbound tourist guidebooks." They seek "quiet," "calm," and an "escape from metropolises (non-urban areas)" as well. Japan's urbanized sightseeing exhausts them, and they seek out the Nakasendo route hoping for a peaceful and quiet communion with nature. They hold in high regard the natural landscape of "mountain ranges," "forests," and "rivers and waterfalls," as well as "rice paddies," "agricultural scenes," and a "rural lifestyle," that may be considered "ordinary" by Japanese people living in agricultural regions. Overall, Western tourists do appreciate an "authentic rural experience," and the elements of ancient Japanese history and culture that can be seen even in the present day. Moreover, Western tourists who visit the Nakasendo are typically employed in knowledge-based professions, working as lawyers, doctors, researchers, and professors, or in creative professions, working as designers, architects, or IT professionals. As a result, it can be concluded that walking tourism in the Nakasendo appeals to Western tourists who seek an alternative tourist experience of peace amidst nature, which is not available in a city, both because the Nakasendo is not frequented by Western tourists and because it offers something different from a "typical" sightseeing experience.

Japanese Journal of Human Geography, Volume:69, Number:1, First page:101, Last page:119, Apr. 2017, [Reviewed]Amidst the globalization and environmental changes in farming worldwide since the 1990s, multifunctional agriculture (MFA) has attracted much debate as to whether the worth of farming and agricultural villages will be discovered anew. In trade liberalization negotiations with the WTO at the center, in particular, significant subsidies for farming and agricultural villages in developed countries have become a target for the reduction of international rules, leading to the MFA being used politically by various countries; mainly European countries that require protection for farming. This study aims to clarify the background behind the emergence of MFA and its concepts from the viewpoint of their application to field research, focusing on the English and French research on MFA. This study also aims to clarify the political context and theoretical background of MFA. The MFA theory was developed in relation with the post-production principle that was proposed in the 1990s. The dichotomy between the production and post-production principles or the conceptual limits of the post-production principle led to the expansion of the MFA theory and the debate developed around the conceptual studies on MFA. On the other hand, the lack of empirical research of the post-production principle is similar to the MFA theory and the positioning of the practice and application of MFA theory to field research is discussed, focusing on the concepts of the geographer Wilson. In the application of the MFA theory, it is important to review the impact of the MFA theory on farmers from the viewpoint of the relation to policy and to understand MFA in a wider regional framework. Furthermore, it is essential for MFA to focus on differences in the poltical context and the geographical scale of each country, as well as on the mutual interactions between the macro context and the micro farmer.

The objective of this study is to understand beef branding and its traditions in a mountainous area of France. To address this subject, this study focuses on the process of local product branding under the geographical indication law, and how this law maintains the quality and traditions of Fin Gras de Mzenc beef. Fin Gras de Mzenc has unearthed buried memories of past animal husbandry, and people use this knowledge as a regional tradition to uphold the characteristics of the geographical indication. Fin Gras de Mzenc, which is distributed and consumed locally in a small area, is a suggestive case for understanding the application of the law in other regions.

The present study aims to clarify the relationship between randonneuring and tourism in the Massif Central in France using tourist referencing of Robert Louis Stevenson's Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes as a case study. Route maintenance by the Fédération Française de la Randonnée Pédestre was an opportunity for the establishment of the Stevenson Trail, which was realized by the association Sur le Chemin de R. L. Stevenson. As a form of alternative tourism, the main purpose of the Stevenson Trail was not to generate profit for the Association but to local development. For its part, the Association achieved financial stability through subsidies from the EU, French, and local governments. Meanwhile, randonneuring tourists were motivated by the opportunity for self-discovery amid cultural exposure and images. Tourists were mostly driven to join a randonneuring of the Cévennes by a desire to explore unseen land and take in the terroir of mountain villages. The Stevenson Trail is considered as a type of tourism activity that enables randonneuring tourists to interact with culture, nature, and terroir.

The objective of this study is to clarify the changes of agriculture in mountainous regions under the CAP by focusing on the relationship between farm management and agricultural policy in the mountainous regions of France. In particular, a composition of income from subsidies that accounted for the total agricultural income and an investigation on the perspectives of farm households were emphasized.
Since the 1960s, structural policy has differentiated between dairy husbandry management and other Mézenc operations, decreased the agricultural population, increased the number of corporation management companies, and increased productivity by agricultural production engineering and the breed improvement of livestock and grain. Meanwhile, production control policy promoted management differentiation between dairy farmers of Mézenc and diversified management types by preferential measures for beef cattle and sheep.
As for agricultural income, it was clarified that the dependence of beef cattle farmers and farmers of mixed sheep on subsidies was high because of payment for the number of livestock and because dairy farmers who could not receive payment connected directly to pro

Less favored areas are the main focus of the common agricultural policy (CAP) of the EU. However, there is insufficient research on the economic strategies of farmers in mountainous regions of France. The objective of this study is to understand the management strategies of mountain farmers in mountainous regions of Mézenc in Massif Central of France. The results can be summarized as follows. First, each farmer is classified into five types: dairy farmer, beef cattle farmer, mixed bovid farmer, mixed sheep farmer, and other farmers. Their farm product market has two characteristics. One type of farm trades with large companies such as Danone or Soddial, and the other type trades with local organizations or associations in Haute-Loire. Second, value-added farm products are an important component for farmers in Mézenc when formulating their economic strategies. This region is covered by two types of geographical denomination of the Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC). Efforts to ensure value-additions to farm produce are important for farmers in Mézenc. However, some farmers with large farms, such as farms belonging to mixed bovid farmers, are dependent not on value-addi

This paper aims to depict the process of farmland accumulation by large-scale tenant farmers in the suburbs of Metropolitan Tokyo, focusing on social relationships among farmers. Data on farm management, changes in farming, distribution of farmland, percentage of leased land to total farmland, landowners renting out their cropland, and functions and membership of social groups were collected by conducting interviews with farmers and other people in the study area. Then, the data were analyzed to identify how closely tenants and landowners were related in social aspects.
The study area is the Kitasuka district of Narita City, Chiba Prefecture facing by Lake Inba. Rice monoculture has been dominant in this area. When construction of Narita Airport created many off-farm employment opportunities in the 1970s, many farmers who were engaged in off-farm jobs wanted to rent out their farmland. On the other hand, rapid mechanization and increased application of agrichemicals enabled full-time farmers to expand the scale of their farming activities by leasing farmland. As a result, large-scale tenant rice farming grew in this area.
The main findings of this study are summarized as follows:
The people in the study area belong to various social groups, which are generally classified into the groups with territorial relations and those with kinship relations. The former include residents' associations of local districts or settlements, alumni association of an elementary school, patron of a local shrine, and membership of irrigation districts. The latter include ties between parents and children, ties among close relatives such as brothers, sisters, uncles, nephews, and cousins, relations between head and branch families, and relations by marriage.
Lending and borrowing of farmland were mostly pursued within the district where tenant farmers lived, and were strongly influenced by close territorial and kinship relations. This type of farmland accumulation has long contributed to the development of large-scale tenant rice farming and to its sustainability. On the other hand, a new type of farmland accumulation has recently emerged as third-party organization has begun to mediate between tenants and landowners. The mediator in this case is the municipal government of Narita. Present successful tenant farmers have accumulated their farmlands by taking advantage of this opportunity in addition to traditional territorial and kinship relations.

This study examined the possibility of regional development owing to the commodification of rural space for recreation and tourism and its regional differences in Japan. Especially we focused on central Japan. Walking areas are located within city, allotment garden areas are close to the city and farm produce shops, hiking and rural experience areas appear successively further from the city. You-pick farms, escaping the summer heat, skiing, climbing and marine leisure activities are located in specific areas that have appropriate physical, social and economic conditions. We can find a pattern of concentric rings around Tokyo metropolis. The difference of natural conditions, the characteristics of farming, the existence of current tourist sites, and the proximity to metropolitan areas affect rural space in central Japan.
Based on the above mentioned regional differences, we did sample studies on the commodification of rural space for recreation and tourism.
