This paper examines the fortresses along the the road to the heavenly khagan, which is thought to have been used by the Mongolian and Chinese dynasties on the Mongolian plateau for warfare and exchange. It found that Uyghul forts around Arvaikheer at the northern edge of Gobi Desert are no different from the area around the capital. However, there is a vast blank area between Sairin balgas at the southern edge and these Uyghur forts. It is also thought that a similar route was used during the earlier Xiongnu period, but again no strongholds were found in the Gobi Desert. Instead, the study reconfirmed the construction of Han fortification such as Sairin balgas and Bayan Bolag. The location and aspect of these earthworks allowed us to make new estimates of the Han invasion routes.

The authors surveyed sites from Bronze Age to the Uyghur period in May 2023 to explore the background behind the formation of mobile pastoralist stronghold monuments and forts. Khereksur in Bronze Age grew huge around 1000 BC, and became burial and ritual complexes. The largest examples of this are concentrated in the Khnui River basin. The Khanui River basin has a corridor-like geographical environment, approximately 1-2 km wide, that appears to connect the Dergelmurung River basin in the north with the Tamil River basin in the south. The Khanui River basin appears to have been a major transport hub, as noted by previous studies, because of forming one of the largest cemeteries of the Xiongnu period, Gol mod 2.
Furthermore, among the numerous Xiongnu forts that have been confirmed in recent years, we have conducted measurements on the Khandgait forts in the Selenge River basin and found that they bear similarities to the Ivorga forts in Zabaykalye. As estimated in the previous survey, it was again found that the Xiongnu forts have regional characteristics in each river basin. Finally, we surveyed the castle sites of the Old Turkic and Uyghur. It confirmed that they constructed their castle sites and monuments along routes that connected the north and south, distinct from the Khanui River basin. Mobile pastoralists and nomads seemed aware of the importance of positioning their strongholds in transportation routes, avoiding rivers with high water levels. This aspect appears to be closely linked to the formation of power among these communities.

Authors surveyed a Xiongnu and Uyghur forts and castles in May 2022, mainly in the Orkhon Valley. Many excavations have been carried out in recent years on Xiongnu earth castles, and sites with unprecedented characteristics have been discovered. Many excavations have been carried out in recent years on Xiongnu forts, and sites with unprecedented characteristics have been discovered one after another. As a result of survey, it was found that the Xiongnu forts have regionality. Regarding Uyghur castles, we confirmed that they have diverse structures and clarified their commonalities. As forts and castle in the Mongolian plateau were not built after the Xiongnu until the Uyghurs, finally we discussed its background.

    First page:46, Last page:63, 20 Mar. 2024, [Corresponding]

Based on archaeological investigation and interdisciplinary research on the central cities of Han and Six Dynasties, and cities of Lingnan area, the study unveils a real picture of cultural transmission and assimilation around East Asian Cultural Sphere. From three excavations conducted around LUY LAU of Jiaozhi Province, a registered historic site in Vietnam, We can see the structure of administrative centers in Red River Delta area. Over 10,000 pieces of relics were found, including metal, bricks, tiles, ceramics, wooden lacquer wares, silk, gilded copper Buddha statues with halo and Indian glass marbles etc. Local bricks and tiles production sites and workshops were also identified. Furthermore, we conducted researches on the relics and circulation of information over time within the area. It gives us a dynamic view of the movement of people and items in the way that literature cannot provide. It shows how Chinese culture and local customs were integrated and exchanged peacefully.

This research showed the two-step introduction of kiln in Korea; first flat kiln was brought from Northern China, next Oblique-pit kiln was formed under the influence of Southern China. In addition, the result of our analysis indicated that flat kiln fired pottery in low temperature. After the introduction of the oblique-pit kiln, it could fire pottery in stable high temperature. On the other hand, open-fired pottery was kept making as the cooking tools. It is said that the societies of Korean three kingdom period had a multiple pottery production systems; open-firing and oblique-pit kiln firing. Then, we studied the introduction process of high temperature firing by the oblique-pit kiln from Korea to Japan from the viewpoint of organization of potters and making technique of pottery. The result showed two patterns of potter-immigration; one is the small group consisted of open-firing potters and kiln-firing potters, the other is large groups consisted mainly of kiln-firing potters.

The purpose of this research is to establish the method to analyze pots from an ecological- functional viewpoint, focusing on the balance between functional efficiency, durability and cost.
Our research method is unique in that it consists of (1)detailed observation of firing traces found in archaeological ceramics, (2)a series of field firing experiments which are designed to help interpret various patterns found in archaeological pots, and (3)systematic comparative studies of paddy-rice farmers' ethnographic field firing techniques, which enables us to demonstrate fundamental structure and variations of covered-firing techniques.
Another characteristic of the present study is a series of workshop were held in order to introduce the above research methods and know-how of firing-trace analysis to archaeologists who are interested in this kind of topics. A total of 8 workshops were held during the 2 years term. Fortunately, some archaeologists got interested in our research method, and took part in analyzing and writing reports after the workshops.
As a result of these workshop research, the following points have been demonstrated. First, concerning the inception of the covered firing from the Korean Peninsula at the beginning of Yayoi period, it became clear that the first Yayoi people in western Japan accepted the covered firing technique which was almost same as that of Korea in that relatively large amount of firewood were consumed, and the rice-straw cover was not very tight. However, in the course of the development of paddy-rice farming in western Japan, the original covered firing gradually changed into a less-fuel consuming ones with tighter coverage, showing more distinctive differences from Korean covered-firing.
