Background: Saturation of nuclear density is a fundamental property of atomic
nuclei but in reality, the nuclear internal density distribution is not
uniform, e.g., some nuclei are known to have the so-called bubble structure, in
which the central density is depressed.
Purpose: We aim to unveil the emergent mechanism of the non-uniformity of the
nucleon density distributions for whole nuclear mass regions, not only for a
typical bubble structure.
Method: We systematically investigate the nucleon density distributions using
the Skyrme Hartree-Fock plus Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer calculation represented
in the three-dimensional Cartesian coordinate space. The ground states of 1,389
even-even nuclei are generated. To quantify the nonuniformity of these density
distributions, a ``generalized bubble parameter" is introduced.
Results: We find that the bubble structure appears around the magic numbers,
which correspond to the regions where the s orbit appears near the Fermi
surface. The nuclear deformation and pairing correlations strongly affect the
occupation probability, but the robust bubble structure of a medium mass
nucleus, $^{100}$Sn, is found. We confirm that the Coulomb force enhances the
bubble degree in the superheavy region. The nuclear non-uniformity is further
generalized by the ``multi-layered" bubble structure, which exhibits some
density depression in the internal regions of the density distributions.
Conclusion: The non-uniformity of the internal density distribution occurs
due to the deficiency of the specific single-particle orbits: the nodal $s$,
$p$, and $d$ orbits. This is certainly reflected in the density distribution
near the nuclear surface, which can be deduced from proton-elastic scattering.

We provide a global density-dependent α-nucleon (DD-αN) interaction to construct the α-nucleus optical potential in a wide range of incident energies. The α-nucleus potential based on the folding model with the present DD-αN interaction reproduces the experimental data up to backward angles using the point-nucleon density obtained by the mean-field model. The present DD-αN interaction is based on the phenomenological optical potential to reproduce the p + 4He elastic scattering at the incident energies at 12.04–1000 MeV. Namely, the α-nucleon system is considered an elementary process. The density dependence (medium effect) of the DD-αN interaction is phenomenologically added to reproduce the α elastic scatterings by the 16O, 40Ca, 58Ni, 90Zr and 208Pb targets at E/A = 10–342.5 MeV. The total reaction cross sections are also compared with the experimental data.

Abstract
We provide a global density-dependent 4He-nucleon (DD-αN) interaction to construct the α-nucleus optical model potential (OMP) in a wide range of incident energies. The global parametrization for the DD-αN interaction is obtained based on the proton-4He OMP which reproduces the elastic scattering cross-section data very well in the incident energies of 12.04–500 MeV per nucleon. We derive the α-nucleus potential by a folding procedure with the point-nucleon density obtained by a microscopic mean-field model using the present DD-αN interaction. The density dependence of the DD-αN interaction is fixed phenomenologically to reproduce the α-nucleus elastic scattering cross-section data by the 16O, 40Ca, 58Ni, 90Zr, and 208Pb targets at E/ A = 10–342.5 MeV. We also show the total reaction cross sections, which are helpful in fixing one free parameter, the renormalization factor for the imaginary part of the α-nucleus potential. Lastly, we show some examples, which clearly demonstrate the validity and power of the present DD-αN approach.

Neutron star is an important object for us to verify the equation of state of hadronic matter. For a specific choice of equations of state, mass and radius of a neutron star are determined, for which there are constraints from observations. According to some previous studies, since the strong magnetic field acts as a repulsive force, there is a possibility that neutron stars with strong magnetic fields may have relatively heavier masses than other non-magnetized neutron stars. In this paper, the structure of a neutron star with a strong internal magnetic field is investigated by changing its internal functional form to see how much the neutron star can be massive and also how radius of a neutron star can be within a certain range.

We measured activation cross sections of deuteron-induced reactions on 141Pr. The production cross sections of 141,140Nd, 142Pr, and 139Ce were determined up to 24 MeV using the stacked-foil activation technique and highresolution gamma-ray spectrometry. The derived cross sections were compared with experimental data studied earlier and theoretical model calculations. Our results are consistent with part of the previous data.

We investigate the energy distribution of the isoscalar monopole and dipole transitions in the heavy systems, such as 44Ti and Te isotopes. The macroscopic a cluster models with a+40Ca and a+Sn are applied to 44Ti and Sn isotopes, respectively. The present calculation shows that the monopole and dipole strengths are strongly enhanced by the excitation in the the a cluster degrees of freedom. The discrete and sharp strength is generated by the a cluster excitation at the excitation energy much lower than the energy for the single nucleon excitation inside of the uniform mean field potential.

The Coulomb shift in the mirror systems of a +14C in 18O and a+14O in 18Ne is investigated by applying the orthogonality condition model (OCM). The result of OCM predicts the reduction of the excitation energies of the higher O+ states in the proton-rich nucleus of 18Ne in comparison to the energies in the neutron-rich 18O nucleus. This reduced excitation energy is similar to the phenomenon known as the Thomas-Ehrman shift, which means the lower shift in the excitation energy of the s-wave single particle orbit around the 16O core.

In this paper, we briefly review the studies on nuclear structure and nuclear dynamics using the Canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (Cb-TDHFB) theory which is one of the time-dependent mean-field models which deal with nuclear pairing correlation. At first, after a brief introduction of the time-dependent mean-field models, we explain the derivation and the properties of Cb-TDHFB equations. Next, we introduce the methods to study the nuclear linear responses and to simulate the nuclear collision in terms of the time-dependent mean-field models. Then, we display parts of the results obtained by using the time-dependent methods; Strength functions of electric dipole (E1) excitation mode of Yb-172, Systematic study of low-energy E1 mode, and Comparison of the simulations of the fusion reactions using time-dependent mean-field models with and without pairing correlation. Finally, we summarize the Cb-TDHFB activities and discuss its perspectives.

A new nuclear data library, JENDL/ImPACT-2018, was developed for an innovative study on the transmutation of long-lived fission products. Nuclear reaction cross-sections were newly evaluated for incident neutrons and protons up to 200 MeV for 163 nuclides focusing on long-lived nuclei such as Se-79, Zr-93, Pd-107 and Cs-135, adopting some parts of JENDL-4.0. Our challenge was an evaluation of cross-sections for a number of unstable nuclei over a wide energy range where the experimental data were very scarce. We estimated cross-sections based on a nuclear model code CCONE by incorporating an advanced knowledge on the nuclear structure theory and a model-parameterization based on new experimental cross-sections measured by the inverse kinematics. Through comparisons with available experimental data on the stable isotopes, it is found that the present data give better agreements with them than those in the existing libraries. In a neutronics simulation by the PHITS code, we also found that the largest impact of the present library was seen on the estimated amount of isotope productions.

PROGRESS OF THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS, Volume:2019, Number:1, Jan. 2019, [Reviewed]
Coulomb breakup reactions of Zr have been studied in inverse kinematics at incident beam energies of about 200 MeV/nucleon in order to evaluate neutron capture reaction methods. The Zr(n,)Zr reaction is particularly important as a candidate nuclear transmutation reaction for the long-lived fission product Zr in nuclear power plants. One- and two-neutron removal cross sections on Pb and C targets were measured to deduce the inclusive Coulomb breakup cross sections, 375 29 (stat.) 30 (syst.) and 403 26 (stat.) 31 (syst.) mb for Zr and Zr, respectively. The results are compared with estimates using the standard Lorentzian model and microscopic calculations. The results reveal a possible contribution of the pygmy dipole resonance or giant quadrupole resonance in the Coulomb breakup reactions of Zr.

The α + 14C elastic scattering and the nuclear structure of its compound systems, 18O = α + 14C, are analyzed on the basis of the semi-microscopic model. The α + 14C interaction potential is constructed from the double folding (DF) model with the effective nucleon-nucleon interaction of the density-dependent Michigan 3-range Yukawa. The DF potential is applied to the α+14C elastic scattering in the energy range of Eα/Aα = 5.5 ∼ 8.8 MeV, and the observed differential cross sections are reasonably reproduced. The energy spectra of 18O are calculated by employing the orthogonality condition model (OCM) plus the absorbing boundary condition (ABC). The OCM + ABC calculation predicts the formation of the 0+ resonance around E = 3MeV with respect to the α threshold, which seems to correspond to the resonance identified in the recent experiment. We also apply the OCM + ABC calculation to the mirror system, such as 18Ne = α+14O, and the Coulomb shift of 18O - 18Ne is evaluated. We have found that the Coulomb shift is clearly reduced in the excited 0+ state due to the development of the α cluster structure. This result strongly supports that the Coulomb shift is a candidate of new probe to identify the clustering phenomena.

We systematically investigate the neutron-skin thickness of neutron-rich nuclei within a compressible droplet model, which includes several parameters characterizing the surface tension and the equation of state (EOS) of asymmetric nuclear matter as well as corrections due to the surface diffuseness. Such a systematic analysis helps towards constraining the EOS parameters of asymmetric nuclear matter and the poorly known density dependence of the surface tension
the latter is estimated with help of available experimental data for the neutron and proton density distributions and the nuclear masses. Validity of the present approach is confirmed by calculating realistic density distributions of Ca, Ni, Zr, Sn, Yb, and Pb isotopes within a microscopic Skyrme-Hartree-Fock+BCS method for various sets of the effective nuclear force. Our macroscopic model accompanied by the diffuseness corrections works well in the sense that it well reproduces the evolution of the microscopically deduced neutron-skin thickness with respect to the neutron number for selected sets of the effective nuclear force. We find that the surface tension of the compressible nuclear droplet is a key to bridging a gap between microscopic and macroscopic approaches.

Low-lying electric-dipole (E1) strength of a neutron-rich nucleus contains information on neutron-skin thickness, deformation, and shell evolution. We discuss the possibility of making use of total reaction cross sections on Ca40, Sn120, and Pb208 targets to probe the E1 strength of neutron-rich Ca, Ni, and Sn isotopes. They exhibit large enhancement of the E1 strength at neutron number N>
28, 50, and 82, respectively, due to a change of the single-particle orbits near the Fermi surface participating in the transitions. The density distributions and the electric-multipole strength functions of those isotopes are calculated by the Hartree-Fock+BCS and the canonical-basis-time-dependent-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov methods, respectively, using three kinds of Skyrme-type effective interaction. The nuclear and Coulomb breakup processes are respectively described with the Glauber model and the equivalent photon method in which the effect of finite-charge distribution is taken into account. The three Skyrme interactions give different results for the total reaction cross sections because of different Coulomb breakup contributions. The contribution of the low-lying E1 strength is amplified when the low-incident energy is chosen. With an appropriate choice of the incident energy and target nucleus, the total reaction cross section can be complementary to the Coulomb excitation for analyzing the low-lying E1 strength of unstable nuclei.

We have performed a systematic study of the ground state for 1002 even-even nuclei in which 28 octupole-deformed nuclei are found. The interplay between the spatial deformation and the pairing correlation plays an important role in the nuclear structure. Our model is based on the Skyrme Hartree-Fock plus BCS model represented in the three-dimensional Cartesian coordinate space, which can describe any kind of nuclear shape. The quadrupole and octupole deformed nuclei appear in the mass region with characteristic neutron and proton numbers which are consistent with previous studies. In our results, there appear only pear shapes (beta(30)) in the octupole deformed nuclei. We investigate the potential energy surfaces as functions of the octupole deformations (beta(3m); m - 0, 1, 2, 3), which tells us that Rn-220 also has local minima in the beta(31) and beta(32) potential energy surfaces.

The nuclear transmutation is a technology to dispose of radioactive wastes. However, we do not have enough basic data for its developments, such as thick-target yields (TTY) and the interaction cross sections for radioactive material. We suggest two methods to estimate the TTY using inverse kinematics and to obtain the excitation function of the interaction cross sections which is named the thick-target transmission (T3) method. We deduce the energy-dependent conversion relation between the TTYs of the original system and its inverse kinematics, which can be replaced to a constant coefficient in the high energy region. Furthermore we show the usefulness of the T3 method to investigate the excitation function of the C-12 + Al-27 reaction in the simulation.

We propose a method, called as thick-target transmission (T3) method, to obtain an excitation function of interaction cross sections. In an ordinal experiment to measure the excitation function of interaction cross sections by the transmission method, we need to change the beam energy for each cross section. In the T3 method, the excitation function is derived from the beam attenuations measured at the targets of different thicknesses without changing the beam energy. The advantage of the T3 method is the simplicity and availability for radioactive beams. To confirm the availability, we perform a simulation for the C-12 + Al-27 system with the PHITS code instead of actual experiments. Our results have large uncertainties but well reproduce the tendency of the experimental data. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Background: Proton and neutron radii are fundamental quantities of atomic nuclei. To study the sizes of short-lived unstable nuclei, there is a need for an alternative to electron scattering. Purpose: The recent paper by Horiuchi [Phys. Rev. C 89, 011601(R) (2014)]PRVCAN0556-281310.1103/PhysRevC.89.011601 proposed a possible way of extracting the matter and neutron-skin thickness of light- to medium-mass nuclei using total reaction cross section, σR. The analysis is extended to medium to heavy nuclei up to lead isotopes with due attention to Coulomb breakup contributions as well as density distributions improved by paring correlation. Methods: We formulate a quantitative calculation of σR based on the Glauber model including the Coulomb breakup. To substantiate the treatment of the Coulomb breakup, we also evaluate the Coulomb breakup cross section due to the electric dipole field in a canonical-basis-time-dependent-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory in the three-dimensional coordinate space. Results: We analyze σR's of 103 nuclei with Z=20, 28, 40, 50, 70, and 82 incident on light targets, H1,2, He4, and C12. Three kinds of Skyrme interactions are tested to generate those wave functions. To discuss possible uncertainty due to the Coulomb breakup, we examine its dependence on the target, the incident energy, and the Skyrme interaction. The proton is a most promising target for extracting the nuclear sizes as the Coulomb excitation can safely be neglected. We find that the so-called reaction radius, aR=σR/π, for the proton target is very well approximated by a linear function of two variables, the matter radius and the skin thickness, in which three constants depend only on the incident energy. We quantify the accuracy of σR measurements needed to extract the nuclear sizes. Conclusions: The proton is the best target because, once the incident energy is set, its aR is very accurately determined by only the matter radius and neutron-skin thickness. If σR's at different incident energies are measured, one can determine both the proton and neutron radii for unstable nuclei as well. The total reaction cross sections calculated in this paper are given as Supplemental Material for the sake of future measurements.

To dispose of long-lived fission products (LLFP) ejected from nuclear reactor plants is one of the most important tasks on nuclear physics and engineering. The experiments with the radiative target are limited, due to the high radioactivity and chemical property of the target. In consequence, the nuclear reaction data for LLFP are insufficient. In this work, we propose a feasible method to obtain the data for radiative targets using inverse kinematics and simulate specific systems to evaluate the thick-target yields of the nuclear transmutation reactions for LLFP.

Photoabsorption cross sections in calcium isotopes are investigated theoretically with the most advanced nuclear-structure calculations using the nuclear shell model. We show that the photoabsorption cross sections in Ca-48 dominated by a giant dipole resonance (GDR) are well reproduced with the shell model and predict that a pygmy dipole resonance (FOR) appears in Ca-52 in the low-energy tail of GDR. Excellent agreement with the experiment is achieved due to highly correlated many-body wave functions obtained by treating a huge matrix with the dimension of similar to 10(10). The thick-target yield CITY) is a macroscopic quantity reflected by nuclear reactions and matter properties of targets. In order to evaluate TTys on radioactive targets, we suggest a conversion method from inverse kinematics corresponding to the reaction of radioactive beams on stable targets. The method to deduce the TTY is theoretically derived from inverse kinematics. We apply the method to the Cu-nat(C-12,X)Na-24 reaction to confirm availability. In addition, it is applied to the Cs-137 + C-12 reaction as an example of a radioactive system and discussed a conversion coefficient of a TTY measurement. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The quadrupole vibrational modes of neutron-rich N = 28 isotones (Ca-48, Ar-46, S-44, and Si-42) are investigated by using the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with several choice of energy density functionals, including nuclear pairing correlation. It is found that the quenching of the N = 28 shell gap and the proton holes in the sd shell trigger quadrupole correlation and increase the collectivity of the low-lying 2(+) state in Ar-46. It is also found that the pairing correlation plays an important role to increase the collectivity. We also demonstrate that the same mechanism to enhance the low-lying collectivity applies to other N = 28 isotones S-44 and Si-42, and it generates a couple of low-lying 2(+) states which can be associated with the observed 2(+) states.

Systematic investigations of the electric dipole (E1) modes of excitation are performed using the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (Cb-TDHFB) theory. The Cb-TDHFB is able to describe dynamical pairing correlations in excited states of nuclear systems. We apply the method to the real-time calculation of linear response in even-even nuclei with Skyrme functionals. Effects of shell structure, neutron skin, deformation, and neutron chemical potential (separation energy) are studied in a systematic way. This reveals a number of characteristic features of the low-energy E1 modes. We also find a universal behavior in the low-energy E1 modes for heavy neutron-rich isotopes, which suggests the emergence of decoupled E1 peaks beyond N = 82.

We systematically investigate the E1 strength distributions of even-even nuclei (Z = 8- 20 isotopes) using the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory that can describe the dynamics of superfluid nuclei. Especially, we focus on the low-lying E1 strength that is often called pygmy dipole resonance and investigate the neutron-number dependence of the strength in neutron-rich nuclei. The evolution of the low-lying E1 strength is determined by several factors including the neutron-shell effects, the deformation and the pairing.

We have developed the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (Cb-TDHFB) method and carry out a systematic investigation on the low-lying electric dipole (E1) mode using the Cb-TDHFB. The Cb-TDHFB is a new method which is derived from TDHFB represented in the canonical basis with an approximation for pairing correlation analogous to the BCS theory. We apply the method to linear-response calculation for even-even nuclei. We report the neutron-number dependence of low-lying E1 strength in light (A < 70) and heavy isotopes (A > 100) around the magic number of N = 82.

We present simple equations for a canonical-basis (Cb) formulation of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (TDHFB) theory. The equations are obtained from the TDHFB theory with an approximation that the pair potential is assumed to be diagonal in the Cb. The Cb formulation significantly reduces the computational cost. We apply the method to linear-response calculations for even-even light nuclei and demonstrate its capability and accuracy by comparing our results with recent calculations of the quasiparticle random-phase approximation with Skyrme functionals. We show systematic studies of E1 strength distributions for Ne and Mg isotopes. The evolution of the low-lying pygmy strength seems to be determined by the interplay of several factors, which include the neutron excess, the separation energy, the neutron-shell effects, the deformation, and the pairing.

The recent progress of radioactive facilities strongly demands a theoretical method (model) that is able to analyze and predict the elementary modes of excitation in exotic nuclei, including the r-process region which is very neutron-rich. For applications to heavy unstable nuclei, the method should take into account the effects of deformation and pairing correlation. The Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogofiubov (TDHFB) or HFB plus quasi-particle random-phase approximation (HFB+QRPA) are such candidates[1], which are applicable to a wide range of nuclei from light- to heavy-mass regions. However, they require a significant effort for coding the program as well as large computational resources. The TDHFB or HFB+QRPA for deformed nuclei is currently still in a preliminary stage[2, 3, 4]. We propose an alternative yet feasible approach, " Canonical-basis TDHFB" (CbTDHFB) in the three-dimensional coordinate-space representation. The computational task of CbTDHFB is much smaller than that of TDHFB.

We study the total reaction and elastic differential cross sections for proton-nucleus and He-4-nucleus reactions in the framework of the Glauber theory which describes multiple-scattering processes. The input wave functions are obtained using the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method and prepared for a wide range of mass numbers, O, Ca, Ni, Sn, and Pb isotopes. The theory reproduces experimental data very well. An effect of the multiple scattering is discussed by comparing with a standard optical-limit approximation. We see that the multiple-scattering effects play a crucial role, especially in enhancing the elastic differential cross sections at large scattering angles.

The electric dipole (E1) strength functions have been systematically calculated based on the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), using the finite amplitude method and the real-time approach to the TDDFT with pairing correlations. The low-energy E1 strengths in neutron-rich isotopes show peculiar behaviors, such as sudden enhancement and reduction, as functions of the neutron numbers. They seem to be due to the interplay between the neutron shell effect and the deformation effect.

We carry out a systematic study of electric dipole mode (E1) for neutron-rich isotopes from nickel (Z=28) to tin (Z=50) using a time-dependent mean-field theory. Our time-dependent scheme is the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory which can self-consistently describe nuclear dynamics with pairing correlation. We focus our discussion on the pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) and E1 polarizability. The correlation between neutron-skin thickness and PDR strongly depends on the neutron number, but the correlation between the skin thickness and E1 polarizability is much more stable.

We carried out a simulation of heavy ion collision using a time-dependent density functional theory. We call it the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory (Cb-TDHFB) which can describe nuclear dynamics in three-dimensional coordinate space, treating nuclear pairing correlation. We simulate O-20+O-20 collision using the Cb-TDHFB with a contact-type pairing functional, and show the behavior of gap energy which is decreasing and vibrating while colliding.

The superconducting in metal is a quantum phenomenon that is realized by the condensation of the electron pairs at low temperature. In heavy nuclei, protons and neutrons also exhibit properties of the superfluidity caused by their pair condensation. The numerical simulation of reactions for such superfluid nuclei was considered to be impractical, because of its enormous required computational resources. Recently, we have developed a new approach, "canonical-basis time-dependent mean-field theory", which succeeds to significantly reduce the computational cost. Using this new method, it is ex...

Linear response calculations based on the time-dependent density-functional theory are presented. Especially, we report results of the finite amplitude method which we have recently proposed as an alternative and feasible approach to the (quasiparticle-)random-phase approximation. Calculated properties of the giant resonances and low-energy E1 modes are discussed. We found a universal linear correlation between the low-energy E1 strength and the neutron skin thickness.

We carry out systematic investigation of electric dipole (E1) mode from light to heavy nuclei, using a new time-dependent mean field theory: the Canonical-basis Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (Cb-TDHFB) theory. The Cb-TDHFB in the three-dimensional coordinate space representation can deal with pairing correlation and any kind of deformation in the time-dependent framework. We report the neutron-number dependence of the low-energy E1 mode for light (A < 40) and heavy isotopes (A > 100) around N = 82.

We carry out a systematic investigation on the low-energy electric dipole strength, which is often called pygmy dipole resonances (PDR), using the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (Cb-TDHFB) method. The Cb-TDHFB is a new method which is derived from TDHFB with an approximation analogous to the BCS theory that the pair potential is assumed to be diagonal in the time-dependent canonical basis. We apply the method to linear-response calculation for even-even nuclei. We report the neutron-number dependence of PDR in light (A < 70) and heavy isotopes (A > 100) around N = 82.

Several approaches to photonuclear reactions, based on the time-dependent density-functional theory, have been developed recently. The standard linearization leads to the random-phase approximation (RPA) or the quasiparticle-random-phase approximation (QRPA). We have developed a parallelized QRPA computer program for axially deformed nuclei. We also present a feasible approach to the (Q)RPA calculation, that is the finite amplitude method (FAM). We show results of photoabsorption cross-sections for deformed nuclei using the QRPA and FAM calculations. Finally, the canonical-basis approach to the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method is presented, to demonstrate its feasibility and usefulness.

A canonical-basis formulation of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (TDHFB) theory is obtained with an approximation that the pair potential is assumed to be diagonal in the time-dependent canonical basis. The canonical-basis formulation significantly reduces the computational cost. We apply the method to linear-response calculations for even-even nuclei. E1 strength distributions for proton-rich Mg isotopes are systematically calculated. The calculation suggests strong Landau damping of giant dipole resonance for drip-line nuclei.

In light nuclear systems, it is well known that alpha cluster structures appear in excited states. One of characteristic properties in the alpha cluster structures is a prominent extension of the matter radius. Typical example is the 3 alpha structure in 12C. The matter radii of the 3 alpha state is expected to be prominently enhanced in comparison to the matter radius of the ground state but the direct measurement of the 3alpha radius is completely impossible because of its short life time.
In this study, we have formulated a method of scattering radius, which characterizes a spatial size for final state productions in nuclear reactions. The scattering radius is sensitive to the matter radius of the final state produced by the nuclear reaction. We have applied this method to the alpha + 12C inelastic scattering, which goes to the 3 alpha state in 12C. We have confirmed that the matter radius of the 3 alpha state is enhanced by about 1 fm in comparison to the ground 12C nucleus.

Nuclear reactions are fuel of stars and microscopic processes to produce heavy elements in stars and stellar explosions. Nuclear fusion and fission processes are particularly important reaction mechanisms. They are collective motions, involving many nucleons, of quantum nature with strong anharmonicity, which is a challenging subject in theoretical physics. These reactions are also closely related to low-energy collective excitations in nuclei. Thus, they are of great interest as a problem of nuclear structure. Conventional approaches to these problems assume its reaction path and adjusting the potential. In the present research, we remove all these assumptions and start from nucleonic degrees of freedom. We have achieved to derive the collective Hamiltonian for a fully non-empirical description of the nuclear reactions.
