  • Syntheses of Iminophosphomamido Chlorogermylenes and their Complexation with Rhodium(I) Complex

    Three‐coordinated chlorogermylenes of the type [Ph2P(RN)2]GeCl (3: R = tBu; 4: R = Dip = 2,6‐iPr2C6H3), which bear an N,N‐substituted iminophosphonamide ligand, were synthesized. The coordination behavior of 3 and 4 toward rhodium(I) complex was investigated. When 3 was treated with 1/2 of an equivalent of [RhCl(cod)]2 (cod = 1,5‐cyclooctadiene), the corresponding chlorogermylene‐Rh(I) complex 5 was obtained as orange crystals. In contrast, the reaction of 4 with a half equivalent of [RhCl(cod)]2 under a CO atmosphere resulted in the formation of a five‐membered germarhodacycle 7. Compounds 3, 4, 5, and 7 were characterized using NMR spectroscopies and single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. Complex 5 can be employed as a catalyst for the hydrosilylation and hydroboration reactions of diphenylacetylene, thus demonstrating the utility of germylene ligands comparable to those of NHCs in the major transition metal catalytic processes.

    The title complex {[Ph2P(tBuN)2](Cl)Si:->Fe(CO)4} (2) was synthesized via the reaction of chlorosilylene [Ph2P(tBuN)2]SiCl (1), supported by an iminophosphonamide ligand with Fe(CO)5 in THF. The molecular structure of 2 was fully characterized by NMR (1H, 13C, 29Si, and 31P) and IR spectroscopies, as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis. In the SCXRD analysis of 2, the silylene ligand was located in the axial positions of the coordination sphere of the central iron atom and other sites were occupied by carbonyl ligands.

    Halogen-substituted silylenes are an important building block for synthesizing silicon-based low-valent and multiple-bond species. However, the number of reports on heavier halosilylenes that contain bromine and iodine is still limited. Here, we present a convenient synthesis for bromo- and iodosilylenes supported by an iminophosphonamide ligand. The heavier halosilylenes [Ph2P(tBuN)2]SiX (2: X = Br, 3: X = I) were successfully synthesized via the halogen-exchange reaction of chlorosilylene 1 with alkali halides in THF. As a demonstration of the reactivity of 2 and 3, oxidative addition reactions of 2 and 3 with elemental selenium in C6D6 afforded the corresponding bromo- (5) or iodosilylene-selone (6) as colorless crystals. The molecular structures of 2, 3, 5, and 6 were fully characterized by spectroscopic means and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Furthermore, the effects of the halogen atom on the electronic state of halosilylenes 1-3 and halosilylene-selones 4-6 were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

    A novel three-coordinated tin(II) chloride [Ph2P(NtBu)2]SnCl (1) supported by an N,N'-di-tert-butyliminophosphonamide having two phenyl groups on the phosphorus atom was synthesized by the reaction of the starting lithium iminophosphonamide [Ph2P(NtBu)2]Li with SnCl2·(dioxane) in toluene. The molecular structure of 1 was established by X-ray diffraction analysis. Tin(II) chloride 1 can act as an efficient precatalyst for the hydroboration of a wide variety of aldehydes, ketones, and imines at -10 °C. DFT calculations propose that hydroboration involves hydride transfer from the corresponding tin(II) hydride intermediate [Ph2P(NtBu)2]SnH (10) to the carbonyl substrates via four-membered transition states (TS-12), affording three-coordinated tin(II) alkoxide intermediates [Ph2P(NtBu)2]SnOR (13), followed by the stepwise reaction of 13 with HBpin (pin = pinacolate) to release the boronate esters and regenerate the tin(II) hydride 10. The stoichiometric reaction of the in site-generated 10 with benzophenone 2a at -10 °C led to the formation of 13. Moreover, 13 also stoichiometrically reacted with HBpin at -10 °C, forming the corresponding boronate ester 3a and 10 based on the 1H NMR spectrum of the reaction mixture.

  • Conversions of Thiirene 1-Oxides to α-Iminothioketones or Oxazoles through Probable Intermediates Sulfilimines

    Three thiirene 1-oxides 1, which possess bulky alkyl substituents at the 2- and 3-positions, afforded α-iminothio-ketones in 59–69% yields on successive treatment with trifluoroacetic anhydride and p-toluenesulfonamide, whereas 1 furnished oxazoles in 65–89% yields on the same treatment with trifluoroacetic anhydride and p-toluamide. A mechanism involving ring-expansion of the initial intermediates, sulfilimines, is proposed for these reactions.

    Phenyl isothiocyanate reacted with 2-methylene-1,3-dimethylimidazolidines to give thermally stable, crystalline adducts that possess an inner salt (1,4-dipolar) structure or its tautomeric thioamide structure depending on substituent on the methylene part. Tautomerism between the 1,4-dipolar form and the thioamide form, X-ray diffraction analysis, and 1,4-dipolar cycloaddition with DMAD of these adducts are reported.

    6-Acetoxy-, 6-methoxy-, 6-azido-, and 6-(methylthio)dibenzo[d,g][1,3,6]trithiocins (13, 14, 17, and 18, respectively) were synthesized by reactions of 9aH-9,10-dithia-4b-thioniaindeno[1,2-a]indene chloride (4) with appropriate nucleophiles in good yields. The trithiocin 13 was also prepared by the Pummerer reaction of dibenzo[d,g][1,3,6]trithiocin 5-oxide (12) in 97% yield. In many reactions of 4 with nucleophiles, the trimeric partial hydrolysis product, bis{o-[(dibenzo[d,g][1,3,6]trithiocin-6-yl)thio]phenyl} sulfide (15), was formed either as the major or a minor product. Structure of 15 was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Meanwhile, heating 4 in boiling methanol or ethanol gave the hydrolysis product, bis(o-mercaptophenyl) sulfide (16), in good yields. Condensation of 16 with benzaldehyde and pivalaldehyde gave 6-phenyl- and 6-t-butyldibenzo[d,g][1,3,6]trithiocins in good yields.

    The reaction of the 6-exo-oxide of 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,5-diphenyl-6,7-dithiabicyclo[3.1.1]heptane (2) with 2KHSO5·KHSO4·K2SO4 gave the first isolable dithiirane oxide, (1RS, 3SR)-3-phenyl-3-(1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-4-oxo-4-phenylbutyl)dithiirane 1-oxide (1), while the 6-endo-oxide of 2 gave both 1 and its (1RS, 3RS)-isomer 10. Under similar reaction conditions, 2 yielded the first isolable, unoxidized dithiirane, 3-phenyl-3-(1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-4-oxo-4-phenylbutyl)dithiirane (3). The dithiirane 3 was also obtained by treatment of 2 with NaOCl–NaClO4. The X-ray structure analyses were performed for 1, 3, and 10. Treatment of unsymmetrical 8,8-dimethyl-1,9-diphenyl-10,11-dithiatricyclo[7.1.1.02,7]undeca-2,4,6-triene with NaOCl–NaClO4gave 3-[1-(o-benzoylphenyl)-1-methylethyl]-3-phenyldithiirane selectively in good yield. However, 1,3-dithietanes, prepared from adamantane-2-thiones, failed to give the corresponding dithiiranes by treatment with 2KHSO5·KHSO4·K2SO4 or NaOCl–NaClO4. The dithiirane 3 thermally isomerized to 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,5-diphenyl-8-oxa-6,7-dithiabicyclo[3.2.1]octane probably via 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,5-diphenyl-5-thioxo-1-pentanone S-sulfide.

    The title compound 1 was synthesized by the reaction of 2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyllithium with O-ethyl thioformate or that of 2,4,6-tri-t-butylbenzaldehyde hydrazone with disulfur dichloride in the presence of triethylamine. The thioaldehyde 1 is a purple crystalline compound which is thermally quite stable; only around 200 °C it underwent intramolecular cyclization to give 6,8-di-t-butyl-3,4-dihydro-4,4-dimethyl-1H-2-benzothiopyran 9. The X-ray crystallographic analysis of 1 revealed that the thioformyl group is almost perpendicular to the aromatic ring. The reaction of 1 with 1-cyano-1-methylethyl radicals afforded 9, while that with t-butyl radicals gave 1,3,5-tri-t-butyl-2-t-butylthiomethylbenzene and t-butyl 2,2-dimethyl-1-(1,3,5-tri-t-butylbicyclo[2.2.0]hexa-2,5-dien-2-yl)propyl sulfide in addition to 9. Some Grignard reagents and organolithiums reacted with 1 gave carbophilic, thiophilic, double addition products and some others depending on the kind of the organometallic reagents. Hydrazine and butylamine reacted with 1 very readily to give the corresponding hydrazone and imine, respectively.

    A series of 3-thiapentane-1,5-diones condense with hydrazine in the presence of a catalytic amount of p-toluenesulfonic acid in refluxing ethanol to give 2,7-dihydro-1,4,5-thiadiazepines in excellent yields. Thermal decomposition of the latter compounds in refluxing diethylene glycol affords the corresponding pyridazines in high yields with evolution of hydrogen sulfide. The above procedure is generally applicable to the preparation of a wide variety of 3,6-disubstituted pyridazines which are of structural interest and otherwise difficult to prepare.

  • Synthesis and reactions of selenoketones.

    A new, convenient method for the synthesis of selenoketones has been reported. The reaction of dimagnesium salts of ketone hydrazones with diselenium dichloride affords an intermediate tentatively assigned as tetraselenides, which are converted into selenoketones by heating in the presence of tributylamine. A comparative study on the reactions of 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-2-indanselone and the corresponding thioketone with Grignard and organolithium reagents have been carried out. Analysis of the reaction products has revealed that the heterophilic attack of the organometallic reagents is much more significant in the reaction with the selone than with the thione.

    O-Cholesteryl chalcogenoformates-d, DC(=X)(OR) (2: X=O; 3: X=S; 4: X=Se; R=3β-cholesteryl), were synthesized and allowed to react with 2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyllithium. 1,3,5-Tri-t-butylbenzene was a main product in each reaction. The other products were 2,4,6-tri-t-butylbenzaldehyde-d (9) for 2, 2,4,6-tri-t-butylthiobenzaldehyde-d for 3, and 9, 6,8-di-t-butyl-1-deuterio-3,4-dihydro-4,4-dimethyl-1H-2-benzoselenin, bis(2,4,6-tri-t-butyl-α-deuteriobenzyl) diselenide, and bis(2,4,6-tri-t-butyl-α-deuteriobenzyl) triselenide for 4. The mechanisms for these reactions have been discussed.

    2,4,6-Tri-t-butylphenyllithium reacts with O-alkyl selenoformates (1) at three different sites (i. e., the selenoformyl carbon, the selenoformyl hydrogen, and the selenium) to give 1,3,5-tri-t-butylbenzene, 2,4,6-tri-t-butylbenzaldehyde, 6,8-di-t-butyl-3,4-dihydro-4,4-dimethyl-1H-2-benzoselenin(11), bis(2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenylmethyl) di(and tri) selenides, bis(2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyl) diselenide, and dibutyl diselenide depending on the reaction conditions and the alkyl group in 1. The formation of 11 is explained in terms of the intermediacy of 2,4,6-tri-t-butylselenobenzaldehyde, which is trapped by condensation reaction with butylamine leading to N-(2,4,6-tri-t-butylbenzylidene)butylamine. Mechanism for the formation of these products is also discussed.

  • Study on the effective and selective synthetic reaction with transition metal catalysts

    The oxidative addition of [Pt(2-nb)(PPh3)2] with a sterically hindered thiol TripSH (Trip = 9-triptycyl) in toluene afforded cis-hydrido(thiolato) Pt(II) complex PtH(Strip)(PPh3)2 as thermally and moisture stable colorless crystals in 91% yield. The thermal reaction of PtH(Strip)(PPh3)2 gave the corresponding thiaplatinacycle. The first stable dihydrogermyl(hydrido) platinum(II) complex PtH(GeH2Trip)(Ph3P)2 was synthesized by the oxidative addition reaction of TripGeH3 with Pt( 2-C2H4)(Ph3P)2 in toluene. The reaction of TripGeH3 with (dppe)PtCl2 in the presence of NaBH4 afforded the corresponding hydrido complex PtH(GeH2Trip)(dppe) together with bis(germyl) platinum(II) complex Pt(GeH2Trip)2(dppe). The ligand exchange reaction of PtH(GeH2Trip)(Ph3P)2 with Cy2PCH2CH2PCy2 (DCPE) in toluene resulted in the formation of PtH(GeH2Trip)(dcpe) in the moderate yield. Thermal rearrangement of Pt(GeH2Trip)2(dppe) in toluene at 60 ˚C gave digermyl(hydrido) complex PtH[Ge(Htrip)GeH2Trip](dppe) in high yield.

  • Syntheses and Properties of vic-Disulfoxides

    vic-Disulfoxides have been recognized as very unstable intermediates in the electrophilic oxidation of disulfides. In 1999, we succeeded in the isolation and structure determination of tetrathiolane 2, 3-dioxide 11, which was the first isolable compound having an-S (O) -S (O) -moiety. After this study, we could prepare 1, 2, 4-trithiolane 1, 2-dioxides 12-14, 7, 8-dithiabicyclo [4.2.1] nona2, 4-diene 7, 8-dioxide 15, and dithiirane 1, 2-dioxide 16. The-S (O) -S (O) -moieties of 11-16 reside in a 5-or 3-membered ring, which should contribute to the stability of vic-disulfoxide bonds. Here we report the syntheses of vic-disulfoxides isolable under ambient conditions and their chemical and physical properties.

  • Synthesis and Properties of Three-membered Cyclic Disulfides, Dithiiranes

    The first isolable, unoxidized dithiirane, 3-phenyl-3- (1, 1, 3, 3-tetramethyl-4-oxo-4-phenylbutyl) dithiirane (16) was prepared by treatment of 2, 2, 4, 4-tetramethyl-1, 5-diphenyl-6, 7-dithiabicyclo- [3.1.1] heptane (14) with 2 KHSO5·KHSO4·K2SO4 (OXONE®) or NaOCl-NaClO4. Monooxides of 14 gave the corresponding dithiirane 1-oxides 17 and 18 by reaction with OXONE®. Under similar conditions, some other dithiirane derivatives were obtained from 5, 6-dithiabicyclo [2.1.1] hexanes, 6, 7-dithiabicyclo [3. 1. 1] heptanes, and 7, 8-dithiabicyclo [4. 1. 1] octanes.
    It was disclosed by a study on competitive thermal reactions that a 3, 3-di-tert-alkyldithiirane is thermodynamically less stable but kinetically more stable than 3-alkyl-3-aryldithiirane 16.
    (1RS, 3SR) - and (1RS, 3RS) -Dithiirane 1-oxides, 17 and 18, respectively, were optically resolved by HPLC equipped with a chiral column and absolute configurations of the four stereoisomers were determined by X-ray single-crystal structure analysis and a chemical property. The mechanism of the racemization (1, 2-oxygen migration) between the respective enantiomers were also discussed.
