偽書は、事実（ファクト）もしくは現実（リアル）と虚構（フィクション）とのあいだに位置づけられる、もう一つの虚構（フェイク）であり、独特の事実＝現実らしさ（リアリティ）を虚構（フィクション）に与える。芥川龍之介「奉教人の死」、谷崎潤一郎「春琴抄」、石川淳「喜寿童女」といった偽書の趣向に基づく近代以降の小説は、現実を拒絶して虚構に向かう指向とあわせて、近代以前の諸テクストによって自らを根拠づけようとする、いわばインターテクスチュアリティへの指向を有する。森鷗外の歴史小説や史伝はその先例とみなされ、たとえば「喜寿童女」は「渋江抽斎」にならった可能性がある。偽書をめぐる考察は、文学の想像力の本質にかかわる。

石川淳の短篇「山桜」（一九三六）に死んだ女性の幻影があらわれるのは、「わたし」が「ネルヴァルのマント」を想起したことをきっかけ＝入口としている。それはテオフィル・ゴーチェらの回想や、唯物史観に照応したアーサー・シモンズの文学史から石川が受け取った、ジェラール・ド・ネルヴァルの「文学的形象」に基づく。それは自殺、狂気、夢というロマン的なシニフィエをはらみ、象徴主義につらなる一九世紀の文学を表象し、フランス革命後の小市民共和主義者によるロマン主義文学運動を想起させるものであり、長篇「普賢」（一九三六）にも投影され、小林秀雄、坂口安吾なども共有していた。そして、物語の最後で幻影は消滅し、あとに立ちすくむ「わたし」が残される。その姿は、こうした「文学的形象」を克服し、二〇世紀の新しい文学にむかう決意のあらわれとみなされる。石川は、そのためのきっかけ＝出口を、まずポール・ヴァレリーに、また近世文学史の見取図をふまえて上田秋成に認めていた。

吉田健一の長篇『東京の昔』（一九七三）は、日本が戦時体制に移行しつつあった一九三七年頃の体験を、執筆時から回想して書かれた。本作や長篇『金沢』（一九七三）など多くの吉田の作品では、「水」の主題が「池」と「河」との対比においてあらわれている。それは「近代」への「内向」と「近代」からの「転向」との「倒錯」を表象している。そして、そのエクリチュールの様態は、ジャクソン・ポロックの営為と重ねてとらえられる。

石川淳の一九四七年の小説「処女懐胎」と「かよひ小町」は、今日的な「護憲」ではなく、「革命」の認識論的布置において書かれた。その天皇制打倒の立場からする日本国憲法への批判と二・一ゼネストへの評価は、中野重治らと共通する。また、その「カトリック＝コムミュニスム」のアレゴリーと事後的なアイロニーは、それらが戦前から持続されたこととあわせて、林達夫らと共通する。なお、それらは戦後の諸作とともに、戦前においては小説「普賢」にもあらわれていた。さらに、アイロニーの事後性については、本多秋五らとも共通する。そして、そのアレゴリーとアイロニーは、表象、代行作用への批判という観点から、大西巨人と吉本隆明によって批判された。

During the research period study group members presented at a number of conferences around the world and published a large quantity of articles in both national and international journals. Notable achievements were the publication of two books and several contributions to a special issue of the journal "Bibliology". The first book, published in December 2020, called "Reading 'A Book of Christian Prayers'", contained the results of two workshops held in 2019 involving young researchers. The second book, published in December 2022, called "Fake Spectrum", contained the results of the research workshops that were held online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The special issue of "Bibliology", titled 'An Invitation to Textual Scholarship', (Volume 17, September 2019), contained seven essays by members of the research group. These research outputs are significant because of their impact outside of the academic sphere. They present the latest findings in textual scholarship to a wider audience.

The purposes of this research project were (1) theoretical reconsideration of the notion and method of "World Literature" which has gained a considerable influence in today's literary studies, (2) investigation of possible contributions of this method to the literary education at Japanese universities, and (3) practical education trial in which we made a point of the notion and method of World Literature.
Our results are (1) in order to get concrete results, we have made a thematic specialization in "Japanese Literature in the context of World Literature", in which we held a joint research with some international specialists in Japanese literature. (2) We held a joint lectures where we made a point of the context of World Literature (2 semesters and 1 quarter) at Saitama University.

This research project concerning Western textual scholarship was carried out by a team consisting of fifteen scholars representing various fields, such as German, English, and Japanese literature, Japanese history, Western Classics, etc., aiming at a future critical reception into the humanities in Japan. Besides reading many papers inside and outside Japan and publishing many articles in Japanese, English and German, we organized international conferences, including the workshop “Reception and Development of Philology in Japan” and the symposium “Theories and Practices of Western Textual Scholarship” respectively at Saitama University and Keio University in March 2015, and the conference “Textual Studies, Canonical Texts and Liberal Arts Education in Modern Japan” at Saitama University in October 2015. Moreover we collaboratively wrote and published the book “What is a Text? : An Introduction to Textual Scholarship” as the culmination of our joint research.

1) Search, Collection and Listing of Relevant Documents and Building of Their Database: For the aim of our research and its further development, it is emergent and essential to search, collect and list first-hand and other relevant documents. Collaborating with and keeping communication with the researchers in and outside Japan, we have been able to record in microfiche the invaluable documents that were never seen in Japan. These documents were accumulated at Saitama University and digitalized in pdf-documents. We are now planning to publish an edited part as The Inventory of Rare Chinese Literary Magazines during 1920-40 (with the Index of Authors No. 3). We further plan to continue to edit the documents and make their databases to researchers' use.
2) Networking of Researchers: We contributed to networking of the researchers working on this topic in and outside Japan. We held six international conferences on the related topics, at which we were able to make substantial progress in research by changing opinions with the researchers at the following organizations and institutes: " Manchuria" Literature Study Group, Study Group of Japanese-Chinese Arts Studies, the Study Group of Modern Literature in 1930's at Research Institute of Oriental Cultures University of Tokyo, and Chinese Literature and Arts Study Group, which has long been publishing" Yaso" Magazine, and Dept. of Chinese Language and Literature University of Peking, Zhou Shuren Musium Peking, Zhou Shuren Memorial House Shanghai, Institute of Literature at Academy of Social Sciences, Dept. of Chinese Language and Literature East China Normal University, and New Center for Chinese Studies, Shantou University. International joint research such as ours will surely constitute a firm and large foundation of the further development of Chinese literature. We are sure that we have thus established academic partnership, although it is merely the first step, with researchers in and outside Japan. Based on this relationship, we will make a further progress in our research.

The period spanning from 1920-40 is known as "The Age of Popular Culture." A comprehensive research was conducted on the literary and cultural discourses published in the magazine King a representative medium of popular culture of those times. Especially it analyses the formation of national identity of Japan and its discriminatory attitude towards the East and the South-East Asia. The study led us to the conclusion that Kung deeply influenced the formation of the Japanese national identity from the educational and moral point of view.
Particularly after 1932, it was evident that it played a very important role politically and militarily by publishing an increased number of articles in support of Japan's national policy that attempted wars against China, Europe, and the United States.
The project report under print at present, to be published as Studies Japanese Popular Literature in June, 2005.
